Today, on the auspicious occasion of Mannam Jayanti, we pay homage to the great social reformer, educationist, and political leader, Mannathu Padmanabhan. Born on January 2, 1877, in Perunna in Kottayam district of Kerala, Padmanabhan’s life was dedicated to the upliftment of the marginalized sections of society.
Early Life and Education:
Hailing from a Nair family, Padmanabhan received his early education in Sanskrit and English at local schools. He later pursued higher studies at the Madras Law College.
Formation of the Nair Service Society (NSS):
In 1914, Padmanabhan founded the Nair Service Society (NSS), initially to uplift the Nair community. However, the NSS soon transcended its communal origins and became a powerful force for social reform in Kerala.
Social Work and Reform
Padmanabhan’s social work was multifaceted. He was a staunch advocate for the abolition of caste discrimination and worked tirelessly to improve the social and economic conditions of the marginalized sections of society.
Temple Entry Agitations: Padmanabhan played a pivotal role in the temple entry movement, which aimed to end the discriminatory practice of restricting entry to temples based on caste. His leadership and the NSS’s mobilization efforts were instrumental in achieving this significant social reform.
Abolition of Caste System: Padmanabhan was a vocal critic of the caste system and worked towards its eradication. He emphasized the importance of education and social awareness in breaking down caste barriers.

Vimochana Samaram: Padmanabhan was a key figure in the Vimochana Samaram, a massive agitation against the Communist government led by EMS Namboodiripad. This movement aimed to unseat the Left government and restore democratic values.
Padmanabhan interacted with several prominent leaders of his time, including Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabhbhai Patel, and C. Rajagopalachari. He shared a deep bond with Gandhi and was influenced by his philosophy of non-violence and social justice.
